Park Ridge Teen Suffered Severe Brain Injuries While 'Roughhousing' With Friend: Police

The 14-year-old boy was in a neighborhood on May 18 when he was knocked unconscious and his skull was shattered, his family said.

PARK RIDGE, IL — A 14-year-old sustained severe brain injuries while "roughhousing" with a friend in a Park Ridge neighborhood last week, according to police.

The boy was in a neighborhood on May 18 when he was knocked unconscious and his skull was shattered, his family said. When he woke up, he called his dad for help, but was unable to remember his location, police said.

His father, Sean Connolly, checked his son's location on his phone and was able to pick him up and bring him to the police station. Authorities took the boy to a nearby hospital, but were unable to determine any exact details about what happened due to the boy's head injury.

Both Connolly and Park Ridge detectives canvassed the neighborhood to collect doorbell and surveillance footage that may have captured the boy's movements.

With the footage that the police collected, they were able to determine that the boy had been "roughhousing" with a teenage friend and was severely injured by accident. Because there was no criminal intent in the incident, police said, no charges were filed against the friend.

"The Park Ridge Police Department would like to thank the community for their cooperation and assistance throughout the investigation. We extend our best wishes to the victim for a full and speedy recovery," the Park Ridge Police Department said.
