School District 64 Plans Local Focus for Veterans Visits on November 9

Local veterans to be honored guests at District 64 schools

More than 30 veterans or active military will be honored participants at Park Ridge-Niles District 64 schools on Friday, November 9 as part of its annual Veterans Day observance.

“Students in all District 64 schools will be learning the meaning of Veterans Day by taking time to reflect on and honor those who have served, particularly the service of our own community members,” according to Superintendent Philip Bender.  “In addition to a variety of in-class studies for that day, three schools are planning special events as part of their learning activities,” he noted.

Roosevelt School will continue its long-standing tradition of honoring veterans at student assemblies, which feature the music and emblems of all five service branches.  This year, seven students from grade 5 have been selected to present short talks about the importance of honoring those who have served our country.  Small groups of veterans then will visit individual classrooms to share their stories with students.  The Roosevelt PTO is again providing both breakfast and lunch for the approximately 25 participating veterans.

Students at Franklin School will begin the day with an outdoor ceremony in front of the school. The Park Ridge Police Department will provide a Color Guard to lead all students gathered around the flagpole for the raising ceremony, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.  Students then return indoors and gather by grade level groups to hear a presentation from a veteran or a current member of the military.

At Carpenter School, grade 3 students will lead schoolmates at various times during the day in singing patriotic flag songs in honor of all veterans.
