Church Women United donation supports The Harbour

The Harbour's Early Literacy Program will benefit from donation

Church Women United (CWU) of Des Plaines presented The Harbour with a generous donation of $1,000 to support their Early Literacy Program. The Harbour’s Early Literacy program provides a book of the month with correlating activities to each of the babies and toddlers in The Harbour’s Successful Teens, Effective Parents program for as long as the family is receiving housing support.

The Harbour, a not-for-profit organization, provides emergency shelter, transitional housing, and supportive services to youth (girls ages 12-23) who are experiencing homelessness in the north and northwest Chicago suburbs.

The Harbour’s Executive Director, Kris Salyards stated “our young mothers benefit from this program as it provides them with a small library of books to read to their children creating positive parenting and bonding, as well as, exposing their children to a growing vocabulary at a very early age.”

The young mothers in the program have historically responded positively to the program as it has helped them interact with their children and gives them a bedtime routine.

CWU is a national volunteer-based Christian movement that works toward social justice and empowerment of women globally. Its constituents represent a broad spectrum of Christian tradition including racial, ethnic, socioeconomic and age diversity and 26 denominations.

CWU of Des Plaines traces its history to a time when migrant workers picked onions on land that eventually became the site of Kmart, at Lee and Oakton streets. CWU volunteers helped teach English to families of migrant workers at that time.

All women of the church are welcome to join CWU of Des Plaines. For details contact Marilyn Hugh, 847/299-1658.
