No Liability With Plane Pull, Official says

Park Ridge police officers can take part in a plane pull for Special Olympics this month without any worry of liability for the city, officials say.

Last month, Park Ridge Mayor David Schmidt worried about the liability for the village resulting from a plane pull police officers participate in each year to benefit Special Olympics. After investigating it, City Manager Shawn Hamilton recently told the city council that the city is not at risk for workers’ compensation claims from to the September 21 Plane Pull, the Park Ridge Sun-Times reports.

Because officials will not actually pull the 90-ton plane at the event, it won't be a liability for Park Ridge, he said. If they do pull it as part of the event, the city still will not be liable, he said, because it is considered a "voluntary recreational program," and not a part of their employment duties. The plane pull helps raise funds for Special Olympics. The department has a fundraising page set up here for donations.
