Cara Smith is the Chief Policy Officer for Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart. In her role at the Sheriff’s Office she is involved in and oversees the development and execution of strategies that address and aid vulnerable populations, both at the jail and in the community.
Up to and including her time at the Sheriff’s Office, Chief Smith has maintained a decorated career within Illinois law enforcement and corrections. She previously served as Chief of Staff at the Illinois Department of Corrections, managing Illinois’ adult inmates and supervising parolees. Prior to IDOC, she served as Deputy Chief of Staff and as Public Access Counselor for Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Chief Smith received her law degree from Loyola University Chicago.
