PEORIA, IL — A Kewanee woman and former police officer has been charged with murder in the death of a Creve Coeur man, Illinois State Police said Wednesday.
Caitlin Girkin, 27, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder months after the shooting, state police said. Girkin is a former police officer in Creve Coeur, the department said.
On March 10, the Creve Coeur Police Department requested state police investigate a death in the 500 block of Roosevelt Street. Police at the scene found 29-year-old Adolfo Cazares suffering from a gunshot wound. Cazares later died from his injuries. The two were reportedly roommates, according to CentralIllinoisProud.com.
Following a months-long investigation, former Creve Coeur police officer Girkin was taken into custody on July 7, according to the department and Illinois State Police.
She was transported to the Tazewell County Jail in Pekin, where she awaits a detention hearing.
Girkin appeared in Tazewell County Circuit Court via video conference Thursday. She requested the detention hearing be delayed to allow her time to retain a private attorney, according to CentralIllinoisProud.com.
