1. Cooking mishap causes fire that injures man, displaces two people (centralillinoisproud.com) — A kitchen fire caused by unattended cooking injured a man and displaced two residents at a home on East Corrington Avenue in Peoria Friday night. Peoria firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze, but damage is estimated at $25,000, and the American Red Cross is helping the residents with temporary housing.
2. Murder count filed against Peoria man in connection with summertime shooting (centralillinoisproud.com subscription) — A 35-year-old South Peoria man has been charged with first-degree murder in the July 23, 2024 shooting death of a Peoria resident on West Garden Street. Authorities say he's currently in another jurisdiction but will be held on return to Peoria County, and the charge could carry decades in prison if he's convicted.
3. New Illinois law to help provide opportunities to young voters (wane.com) — High school students in Peoria and across Illinois will now find voter registration opportunities available right at school under a new state law. Backed by Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth and praised by the Peoria County Election Commission, the measure aims to boost youth civic engagement, especially with only 39% of local 18-year-olds currently registered.
4. Cheapest E85 gas in Peoria County at $2.99 per gallon in week ending Aug. 8 (peoriastandard.com) — If you fill up with E85 in Peoria County, the lowest reported price last week was $2.99 per gallon at one station, with a countywide average of $3.14. Only two of the county's 77 reported gas stations offered E85, and prices remain influenced by refinery outages and global oil tensions.
