Peoria Park District to begin discussions on future for Detweiller Marina (woodfordtimes.com) — Peoria Park District leaders are starting formal talks on how to keep Detweiller Marina publicly accessible while finally making it financially sustainable, after last year's controversial land sale to O'Brien Steel. They'll negotiate with the Detweiller Playground Trust and other stakeholders and are urging Peoria residents to stay engaged as options for reinvestment and reimagining the riverfront property are developed.
2. Peoria 7-year-old writes book to honor his father's memory (centralillinoisproud.com) — A 7-year-old Peoria boy, Ja'Kauri King Hardy, turned his grief over his father's unsolved 2020 shooting death into a prize-winning book for his school's young authors contest. Writing about his favorite memories, he channeled loss into creativity and healing. Police still seek information in Percy King's killing and encourage Peoria residents to come forward.
3. Peoria woman honored for 'heroic' attempt to help neighbor in shooting (eastpeoriatimescourier.com) — A Peoria woman who rushed to help a neighbor during a 2024 domestic shooting has been posthumously awarded the prestigious Carnegie Medal for heroism. She was killed after responding to a child's screams and trying to aid the wounded neighbor, while the gunman has since been convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
4. Man taken into custody following Peoria County shooting death, vehicle fire and infant death (wmbdradio.com) — Authorities in Peoria County have arrested a 24-year-old man after a woman was fatally shot in a home and an infant was later found dead in a burning vehicle linked to the scene. Deputies and Peoria Police are still investigating whether the fire was intentionally set, while two other children in the home were found unharmed.
5. Prep sports recap for Sept. 25, 2026: week six high school football highlights (centralillinoisproud.com) — Peoria-area football fans saw Normal West and Normal Community stay unbeaten, with Community topping Peoria High to remain tied atop the Big 12 standings. A Normal West senior also set the school's career touchdown mark. Several other Central Illinois programs, including Notre Dame, Bloomington, Pekin, Morton, Dunlap, and more, added important week-six wins.
