Pavement Preservation Program Begins May 4 On Peoria Streets

Several Peoria streets are slated for road upgrades in the coming days. Work is scheduled to begin citywide starting Monday, May 4, weather pending. The repairs are part of the City of Peoria Public Works Department’s 2019 Pavement Preservation Program, which was postponed by the contractor in fall and rescheduled for spring 2020.

“Our infrastructure is the lifeline of our community and economy,” said City Engineer, Bill Lewis. “We have to do whatever we can to maintain and extend the life of this valuable asset to keep our residents safe, healthy and moving forward.”

What Type of Work?
The work will consist of street sweeping and slurry sealing across all five districts. Crews will address needed repairs on both sides of the roads, with various roads being closed for a few hours while the material cures. Slurry seal involves the placement of a mixture of water, an asphalt emulsion and small crushed rock on the road surface. Once cured it provides a protective layer over the existing pavement surface, extending the durability and life of the asphalt road.

Pay Attention to Signage
No Parking and other traffic signs will be placed on various City streets a few days before work begins. Residents may be required to find alternative, off-street parking in some areas. Driveways may even be limited for periods of 1-2 hours during the process, however, emergency vehicles will have access at all times. Traffic signs will remain in place until work is complete.
