Residents and visitors may soon notice taller than normal grass growing in Peoria’s medians and vacant lots. Due to the extreme amount of rainfall that hit central Illinois and the City over the past several weeks, Public Works crews and contractors have been working hard, however, they still need to get to numerous vacant lots, public boulevards and rights-of-way.
The Department has received several calls and emails from residents concerned about various properties. Please know that several sites will be addressed in the coming days. The Department appreciates the public’s patience as we work to first address entry corridors, higher traffic roadways, and more population dense areas of the City.

Reminder for Residents and Property Owners
As a reminder, Peoria City Code states grass and weeds cannot exceed 10 inches in height. This includes growth in fence lines, around foundations and at alleyways. Often occupants cut their grass but do not eliminate all of the overgrowth.
If there is a privacy fence on the property, the outside of the fence, and any abutting right of way along the fence must be maintained as well. Tall grass and weeds decreases property values and can lead to mosquito and other vermin issues.
Residents and occupants are permitted to have vegetation in a garden that exceeds 10 inches in height, however, the garden must be maintained and cultivated. Residents should be aware that those who do not comply with the ordinance could also be subject to fines and other penalties.
