Public Works To Gather Pavement Data During May

"The project will create images and data points on city streets – tracking cracks, crevices, potholes, pavement markings and signs."

April 30, 2020

The City of Peoria Public Works Department is teaming up with Transmap to collect pavement data beginning this Friday, May 1 and continuing into the week of May 4. The project will start in the southwest region of the City around South Griswold Street and West Krause Avenue.

A one-man crew from the Ohio-based company will drive the streets in a specialized vehicle retrofitted with multiple panoramic cameras and sensors. The company will capture thousands of images and data points of City streets – tracking cracks, crevices, potholes, pavement markings and signs.

Their findings will be distilled into a ratings system and assembled into a report to be used by Public Works and City officials to guide decision making. The data provides the basis on which decisions are made for Peoria’s roadway maintenance, repairs and reconstruction projects. The Department oversees pavement collection every three years to track and monitor any changes in conditions.

Partnering for Good
The work is being done in partnership with the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission (TCRPC) which serves Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford Counties. Costs are being shared approximately 50/50 between the City and a grant TCRPC received from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) through state’s fiscal year 2019 State Planning and Research Funds.

Per IDOT, the funds are used to support planning and research activities that establish a cooperative, continuous and comprehensive framework for making transportation investment decisions.
