Sheridan Road will undergo extensive rehab and updates beginning this week.
July 29, 2020
Changes to boost area’s walkability and bike-friendliness
Sheridan Road will undergo extensive rehab and updates beginning this week and early next week. On Tuesday, July 28, the City Council voted in favor of moving forward with the project this year, rather than wait until 2021 as previously prescribed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was made possible by the contractor foregoing payment for the work until January 2021.

Project Overview
The project will rehabilitate a two block stretch of Sheridan Road from Eleanor Place to Richmond Avenue which will connect to previous improvements made in 2016, 2017 and in spring 2020. Upgrades in this phase include reconstruction of the roadway, sidewalks, new lighting and a bike lane using permeable pavers. The final improvement will also include new storm sewers, gas and water mains.
Why Sheridan?
Sheridan Road is a highly used corridor in the City with an Average Daily Traffic (ADT) above 6,000 vehicles. The road runs north to south just above Interstate 74 making it a well-traveled arterial road. In addition, CityLink relies heavily on the road as their drivers take riders as far north as Evergreen Square and as far south as Southwest Adams Street. All in all the changes should make the road safer and more enjoyable for residents.

“This is a big deal for this region of our City,” said Bill Lewis, City Engineer. “These are the types of changes that really transform our community—making it friendlier and more livable for everyone. Our team is grateful to have the opportunity to begin working on it this year.”
Temporary Traffic Changes
To optimize public safety, full access for site work and expedite the project, the road will be fully closed and traffic will be detoured. Motorists will be directed down Columbia Terrace to University Street and McClure Avenue to University Street. Property owners may utilize alleyways for access to their properties. The project is slated to be complete by December, weather permitting. Public Works appreciates residents’ patience and cooperation as we continue to Build Peoria.
