143rd Street Extension Work Set To Begin 'Shortly' In Plainfield

PLAINFIELD, IL — Construction on the 143rd Street extension project in Plainfield is set to begin "shortly," the village said Friday.

The highly anticipated project will transform Plainfield. Its goal is to reroute Route 126 onto 143rd Street, shifting traffic and trucks away from the downtown area typically bustling with both pedestrian and car traffic.

In the village's weekly newsletter, staff wrote the project is expected to begin the week of Feb. 5. Staff also unveiled a new website dedicated to the project. The page will be maintained with updates on construction, a project schedule and a corridor map.

Two initial improvements are planned: the east 143rd extension, taking place from 2024-25, and the west extension, planned for 2024.

The west extension entails building a new thoroughfare from Ridge to Steiner roads, including upgrades at Ridge Road, multiple culverts, and stormwater improvements coordinated jointly with neighboring developments.

The east extension involves creating a new road between Route 59 to Route 126 with upgrades at both intersections, a bridge over the DuPage River, a new signalized intersection at Plainfield-Naperville Road, and multiple culvers and retaining walls.

Future projects will include creating a shared-use path on 143rd Street between Van Dyke Road and Wallin Drive as well as widening multiple roads, including the following:

• 143rd Street at Wallin Drive
• East 143rd Street between Wallin Drive and Route 59
• West 143rd Street between Steiner Road and Wallin Drive
• Western access to 143rd Street, between Route 126 and Ridge Road
