The two high school seniors are more than 300,000 from across the United States who participated in the competition, where only about 1 percent are chosen for national medals. Previous alumni of the program include Truman Capote, Andy Warhol and Richard Avedon.

Slawinski and Angulo were two of 15 students from Plainfield Central, South and East high schools to win awards at the regional contest in January, propelling them to the national level.

Angulo is also one of five American Vision nominees from the Suburban Chicago region, and "Blossoming" will move on to compete for the region's Best of Show Award in New York, officials said.
