PLAINFIELD, IL — Three cars collided around 3:50 p.m. Wednesday on Route 59. One person was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and two people refused medical attention, according to Plainfield police.

When police officers and fire crews responded to the area near Route 59 and Riverwalk Court, they found the three hit cars with one of them overturned on its side blocking northbound lanes on Route 59.

The driver of the vehicle that flipped, a 2019 Ford truck, was taken to Rush Copley Medical Center, police said.

According to the preliminary investigation, when the driver of a 2019 Nissan turned left from a stop sign on Riverwalk Court to drive north on Route 59, the driver of a 2012 Volkswagen — which was driving north on Route 59 — swerved to avoid hitting the Nissan.

The swerve put the Volkswagen in the right lane of northbound Route 59, and the car hit the driver's side of the Ford, causing the truck to hit the curb and lose control. The Volkswagen then pushed back to the left and hit the Nissan, and at that time, the Ford turned onto its side, Cmdr. Anthony Novak told Patch.

Both directions of Route 59, between 143rd Street and Naperville-Plainfield Road, were closed for about an hour and a half while first-responders attended to the crash.

The Nissan driver, whose name police did not provide, was issued two citations: failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and vehicle turning left, meaning a vehicle turning left must yield the right-of-way to a vehicle approaching the intersection.
