36 Distracted Driving Citations Issued During Campaign: Plainfield PD

Plainfield police increased their enforcement and took a "zero-tolerance approach" during a distracted driving campaign in April.

PLAINFIELD, IL — Plainfield police issued a total of 55 citations during its distracted driving enforcement period that lasted throughout the month of April, officials said.

Officers issued 36 hands-free law violations as well as another 19 citations, according to police officials. Offenses varied among the 19 citations. Plainfield police told Patch they included the following types:

  • one seat belt
  • one driving under the influence
  • 12 speeding
  • one driving while license suspended
  • one no insurance
  • one expired registration
  • one disobey traffic control device
  • one expired driver's license

"Using your phone in anything other than handsfree mode in Illinois is not only dangerous, but also illegal," police said in a news release Monday. "Break the cycle. Drop it and drive."

In an announcement at the end of March, Plainfield police said they would take a "zero-tolerance approach" toward distracted driving and upped patrol and enforcement zones throughout town.

The department joined more than 200 local agencies to host the month-long enforcement campaign along with the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police.
