AMAN Interfaith Mental Health First Aid Certification Training

Plainfield based AMAN (American Muslims Assisting Neighbors) has partnered with American Muslim Health Professionals to present an interactive and hands-on training designed to prepare interfaith leaders, educators, youth and community activists on Saturday, February 23, 2019 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (CDT) at the Catholic Theological Union 5416 S Cornell Ave, Chicago, IL 606o1.

The one-day training is appropriate for a wide variety of audiences, including but not limited to: members of faith communities and their leaders, youth directors, clergy, community health workers, employers and business leaders, law enforcement personnel, educators, parents, medical providers (e.g., nurses, medical assistants) etc. said Mohammed Faheem, co-founder of AMAN.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a groundbreaking public education program which introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds an understanding of their impact, and overviews common treatments. MHFA is an 8-hour course, which uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect persons to professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The program also teaches about the risk factors and warning signs of specific illnesses like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and addictions.

The training will be conducted by Sister Abeda Khanam who was named the 2015 Hometown Hero in Education and is a science teacher with the New York City Department of Education. Abeda is also a chaplain with the New York State Chaplain Task Force. She is a parental engagement columnist and advocate in the areas of family values, social justice, and mental health. She teaches Mental Health First Aid with the goal of creating robust families and resilient communities.
