PLAINFIELD, IL — The Woodman's Food Market coming to Plainfield will be a grand addition to the village's shopping options — literally. The new grocer will be much larger — about 60 percent bigger — than the size of an average Costco, according to a report from NCTV17.

Jake Melrose, the economic development director for Plainfield, said Woodman's will span 243,500 square feet, whereas Costco is "typically around 150,000 square feet," he told the outlet.

Construction is underway on the grocery store, opening on a 36-acre plot of land at the northwest corner of 119th Street and Route 59. The employee-owned grocery store, founded in 1919, is looking to open in Plainfield — its 20th location — in October 2026, Patch previously reported.

Plainfield staff have worked to bring Woodman's to the village since Walmart shocked locals when it closed in March 2023, Patch reported.

Woodman's will be part retail and part warehouse, storing products for distribution throughout all locations in Illinois and Wisconsin, according to NCTV17.

"We're low-priced, and variety is the main reason customers shop with us," President Clint Woodman told NCTV17, saying Woodman's prices are about 30 percent lower than typical grocery stores. "We'll have the best prices on all the different sizes and varieties of items that we carry — much less than a normal grocery store."

In addition to the grocery store, the lot will also be home to at least seven outlots for separate businesses as well as a fuel center with a car wash, convenience store and oil change center.

With the new grocery store option will come a brand-new, fully improved intersection at 119th Street and Route 59. That entails dedicated left, right and through turn lanes, full crosswalks, and new light signals — "all the bells and whistles ... that'll help traffic flow immensely," Plainfield Mayor John Argoudelis told Patch in January.
