Plainfield's Population Sees Big Increase: Special Census

PLAINFIELD, IL — The Special Census confirmed what Plainfield officials suspected: The village's population has ballooned more than 10 percent since the 2020 Census.

Village staff announced Monday that the U.S. Census Bureau certified the results of its mid-decade census, which determined Plainfield's population has increased to 49,962, representing about 5,200 new residents and an 11.6 percent increase since the 2020 Census.

Plainfield's housing count stands at 17,329 units, officials said. About 16,777 units are occupied, leaving 552 vacant — some unrented and unsold, others rented and sold but vacant, and a few for recreational use, data shows.

"I've seen our community grow from a small farm town of 3,000 to a diverse and vibrant community of over 49,000 people today," Mayor John Argoudelis said in a statement. "The journey has been quite remarkable."

The Village of Plainfield requested a mid-decade census be held to account for what staff estimated to be a 10 percent increase in population since the 2020 Census.

The village launched the count with the hopes of increasing state and federal funding for essential services by $1 million or more a year, Patch reported. Results confirmed the village's funding will increase to about $1.2 million annually until the 2030 decennial census is certified, likely in 2032.
