PLAINFIELD, IL — A large recycling plant in unincorporated Plainfield caught fire Tuesday afternoon, the Oswego Fire Protection District said.
Firefighters were dispatched at 3:30 p.m. to Groot Recycling & Waste Services in the Arrowhead Industrial Park off South Clow Creek Road for a report of an explosion. The first units to arrive determined there was no explosion but found a trash compactor on fire in one of the large recycling units inside the building, according to a news release.
Crews brought the fire under control and prevented extension to the building or additional equipment after being on the scene for about an hour, officials said.
Investigators believe the fire to have been accidental, officials said. All employees evacuated the business, and no injuries were reported.
Firefighters from the Aurora, Naperville, Plainfield, Troy, and Bristol Kendall fire departments assisted Oswego crews on the scene. Bolingbrook and Sugar Grove fire department staff provided station coverage during the response.
