Man Pepper-Sprays Relative, Then Disarms Police During Arrest: Sheriff

PLAINFIELD, IL — A Plainfield man who pepper-sprayed a relative then disarmed deputies who responded to take him into custody for domestic battery, according to the Will County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were dispatched at 5:58 p.m. July 15 to the 16900 block of South Heathercreek Drive for reports of a domestic battery incident. There, they found a woman with red irritation on her back and neck from being pepper-sprayed, a spokesperson told Patch.

The woman told deputies that the suspect, 26-year-old Raymond Dean, took her phone, then left home. Deputies were able to ping the phone, but they weren't able to find Dean when searching the area, officials said.

At 7:40 p.m., deputies located Dean near Arbor Creek and Frontage Road in Joliet, where he was placed in handcuffs.

A struggle ensued as deputies were assuring the handcuffs were a proper fit, officials said. Dean began twisting his arms, tightening the handcuffs, and when the officer extended Dean's arms away from his body to adjust the cuffs, he "grabbed the grip of the deputy's taser and removed it from the holster," the spokesperson said.

The deputy retrieved the taser from Dean and put him on the ground to properly adjust the cuffs, officials said.

Dean was arrested and taken to the Will County jail on two charges of disarming a police officer and domestic battery. He remains in custody as of Monday.
