Blaze At Springbank Subdivision House Appears To Be 'Accidental': Plainfield FD

PLAINFIELD, IL — A house in Plainfield's Springbank subdivision was destroyed in an overnight fire, the Plainfield Fire Protection District said Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were dispatched at 11:57 p.m. Monday to the residence in the 16000 block of Selfridge Circle to find flames showing from three second-floor windows and extending through the roof, according to a news release. The initial 911 call reported the fire to be Longcommon Lane and Rocky Creek Road in the Creekside Crossing subdivision.

Upon arrival, crews were uncertain if residents were trapped in the home, so they began a primary search but shortly after located them safely outside, officials said.

"As fire conditions rapidly deteriorated and the blaze consumed the entire attic space, crews were withdrawn from the structure and transitioned to a defensive fire attack," Plainfield officials wrote in a news release.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 30 minutes and remained on the scene for an additional two hours extinguishing hotspots and conducting overhaul operations.

The vinyl on two neighboring houses was also damaged due to the heat radiating from the intense heat, officials said.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Plainfield fire officials said preliminary findings indicate it was "accidental in nature."

One firefighter sustained minor injuries in the fire and was treated and released at the scene.

Firefighters from the Lockport Township, Troy, Minooka, Oswego and Joliet fire departments helped Plainfield crews on the scene. Crews from the Naperville, Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Bristol Kendall and Montgomery fire departments provided station coverage.

Nicor Gas and ComEd responded to secure the utilities, and the Plainfield Police Department and Plainfield Emergency Management Agency helped with traffic control, scene lighting and firefighter rehabilitation.
