Assisted Awareness Psychological and Counseling Services, of 24109 Lockport Street, in Plainfield, Illinois, had its ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on May 15, 2012. Dr. Bo Travis’s dream in creating Assisted Awareness was to be able to follow his passion, psychology, and to be able to provide relief to people struggling. Bo’s idea to reduce suffering was to bring into awareness people’s motivation, intent and purpose, for engaging in the behaviors and thoughts that exacerbated their suffering. By doing so, he could help them “live life deliberately.” Bo’s wife suggested the business name; and with Karen Smith, his early partner, the business was born in Joliet in 2004.

Karen went on to become the Clinical Director at a non-profit agency; and Bo moved the business to Plainfield in 2007. He arrived at the height of planning for the Downtown Streetscape Project. The business community openly welcomed Assisted Awareness. The homey office at the corner of Fox River Street and Lockport Street proved to be the perfect match for Bo’s style of homespun counseling. The warm, intimate interior, with its floors slightly askew, was a perfect match for making clients feel welcome to follow the only rule he had for them: “You’re not allowed to be perfect.”

While the downtown area metamorphosized into the beautiful streetscape we enjoy today, Assisted Awareness went through its own metamorphosis. Bo earned his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and became licensed as a Clinical Psychologist. He taught and supervised budding counselors in his own style. Rebecca Ehler and Philip Kocisko are the two Licensed Professional Counselors with Master’s Degrees who are currently providing psychotherapy services under Bo’s supervision. With the addition of a full-time intern, Nicki Zeller, who will soon have her Master’s Degree in Forensic Psychology, Assisted Awareness outgrew its cozy office on the corner.

In November 2011, Assisted Awareness moved three doors east, to its current location at 24109 Lockport Street. The expansive space provided a blank slate for creating an updated, fresher space for providing the homey, comfortable and welcoming style of counseling which Assisted Awareness has become known to provide. Rebecca and Philip are independently providing their own spins on the Bo-isms developed during the 19 years Bo has been counseling individuals. Bo’s future time will be directed toward providing psychological evaluations. He will continue to be the mentoring presence of Assisted Awareness as he confidently passes the counseling torches to his very competent associates, Rebecca, Philip, and Nicki.

Appointments may be scheduled by calling the office number, 815-436-1101, and leaving a message; after which Philip or Rebecca will respond to requests for counseling. Requests for Bo’s psychological evaluations may be made in the same manner. Appointment days and times are based upon counselors’ availability.

The future is sure to hold more opportunities for growth. Bo will welcome his new intern in June 2012. Sabrina Knizner, who has been the office glue as manager, client relations specialist, and medical biller, will continue to assist clients by directing them to our new billing services, and by focusing on updating our web presence, found at www.assistedawareness.com, to be of better service to our clients.
