Combat Hapkido: The Science of Self-Defense

Combat Hapkido is a self-defense system based on scientific principles and modern concepts, founded by John Pellegrini in 1990.

Combat Hapkido is known as the “Science of Self-Defense.”

This relatively new style incorporates more self-defense scenarios, addressing some common criticism with traditional Hapkido. It teaches its practitioners how to find advantageous ground while defending themselves, recapturing control of the encounter from the attacker.

This is done in most cases by closing the gap with the attacker, which is not a naturally instinctive reaction in this kind of adverse situation. Closing the gap is usually something the attacker does to maintain the advantage during a fight. There is also an emphasis on foot and hand placement during the encounter, not only for blocking, but redirection purposes.

Combat Hapkido includes some traditional Hapkido moves that remain powerful self-defense techniques, including: joint locks, pressure points, throws, hand strikes and low-lying kicks. Combat Hapkido encourages its practitioners to counter or preemptively strike in an imminent attack for self-defense purposes.

Some further similarities with traditional Hapkido include an emphasis on small circular motion, non-resisting movements, and control through force and redirection. Combat Hapkido also omits certain traditional Hapkido techniques considered impractical in a self-defense situation.
