Cows On The Loose On Illinois Highway: VIDEO

A trailer carrying more than five dozen cows overturned on I-74 in Danville on Saturday.

DANVILLE, IL — "That's not something you see every day," a Facebook user commented in a video posted over the weekend showing a "stampede" of more than five dozen cattle fleeing an overturned trailer on I-74 near Danville. The video shows vehicles slowing to a crawl as the livestock run down the highway. The cattle were later rounded up after escaping to a nearby field, according to IllinoisHomepage.net.

The crash reportedly occurred Saturday afternoon when a driver hauling the cattle — 72 cows total — reached to grab a drink, lost control of the livestock truck and it overturned. The driver, Robbie Miller, was reportedly taken to a hospital for injuries, and several cows had to be euthanized following the crash.

The crash occurred just before 4:30 p.m., and the News-Gazette warned drivers to steer clear of the area. "Some of the cattle are loose and standing near the interstate,” state police told the outlet, adding, "it is extremely important that drivers slow down and be very cautious when traveling through this area."

While cows on the highway definitely isn't something you see every day, a Danville tow truck driver said he's responded to about a dozen accidents involving livestock over the last 30 years.

"We've had incidents later where they're out here and cause secondary accidents which nobody wants," Brian Carnaghi told IllinoisHomepage.
