D202 Board Approves Project Jupiter Agreement, Citing Tax Boost

Members of the D202 Board approved the 10-year agreement, saying it will provide nearly $500,000 more in school funds annually.

PLAINFIELD, IL — District 202 is expected to benefit financially from the planned Diageo warehouse, according to a release from the district. "Project Jupiter," as the development project is known, will boost the district's property tax revenue by as much as $482,000 annually as part of a 10-year intergovernmental agreement, the release says.

Project Jupiter involves developing the farm land at Steiner Road and 143rd Street. Diageo, one of the largest liquor producing companies in the world, plans to open a warehouse and distribution center in the lot, less than two miles from the company's existing facility at W. 143rd Street and S. Van Dyke Road.

The district's share of property taxes from the site would jump from $3,383.79 to $485,069 annually, according to the release. "The project will generate significant local property tax revenues for District 202 without adding students or any student-related costs, like transportation," the release says.

However, Project Jupiter is not without controversy. Residents are complaining that the developed property would mean tons of traffic. A memo to the plan commission says a traffic study for the project projected 2,160 total trips, including 130 daily shuttle truck trips between the existing, and new, facilities along W. 143rd Street.
