Defense Struggles as Plainfield North Loses to Hinsdale

’s biggest detriment to their success has been their defense. It was on full display Wednesday with six errors in their 4-1 loss to .
“They’re good players, but they’re young,” Tigers coach Claude Ainsworth said. “A lot of sophomores and juniors on the roster right now, and it shows.”
In the bottom of the first, after a pair of singles to start off the inning, Hornets (2-4) center fielder Dara Capocci hit a line drive that was misplayed by left fielder Grace Oberg, scoring third baseman Lindsey Schwarz. Right fielder Lauren Cairo made it 2-0 on an RBI groundout to second baseman Katie Ready.

The Tigers (1-5) closed the gap to 2-1 in the top of the fourth, jumping starting pitcher Jessica Andree with a double, two singles, and a fielder’s choice groundout that scored their only run.
Reliever Amy Narotsky came in and put the clamps down, striking out first baseman Rion Williams and a runner’s interference call during the next at-bat. Narotsky cruised the rest of the way, pitching 3 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts and no walks.

The Hornets took advantage of three throwing errors in the fifth to extend their lead to 4-1. Third baseman Brittney Euraitis made two throwing errors on grounders in back-to-back plays. The latter sailed over Williams’ head, scoring runners that were on second and third.
The third error occurred during a rundown at the end of the play. Capocci, the hitter, advanced to second after a poor throw by second baseman Katie Ready wound up hitting Hornets assistant coach Jillian Karsa.
“We played a little better today,” Hornets coach Kelly Van Hout said. “Still some little things I want to work on.”
Tigers starting pitcher Erin Enk pitched six innings, allowing four hits and striking out two. The Tigers also stranded five runners in the contest, stranding runners in scoring position in the first and fourth inning.
The Tigers go to Oswego on Thursday. The Hornets host a tournament starting Thursday.
“Our goal is to win the tournament,” Van Hout said.
