This is just a casual interest survey question born out of mild curiosity. (I may post this elsewhere as well to cast a bigger net.)

This fun article, “Fending” and Other Terms for Fridge-Foraging Dinners, (The New Yorker, Apr 26/May 3, 2021) and a chat with a friend spun up this question:

What do you call it when you decide to just make dinner out of random bits, often an assortment of leftovers, that are on hand?

At our house we call it "hunt-and-peck". No one in our family remembers why we do or when we started but we know we've called it that for a very long time. My friend's family calls it "fending". She also cannot remember why they do or when they started calling it that. Thanks in advance for your time.
