Grease Fire Causes $100K In Damage To HopScotch & Vine: Restaurant

Nearing its 14th anniversary, the restaurant will remain closed as "we try to clean up and get ready to invite everyone back in."

PLAINFIELD, IL — HopScotch & Vine revealed the blaze in its kitchen late Wednesday morning started when a fryer caught on fire "right when we opened," staff said.

The restaurant typically opens its doors at 11:30 a.m. weekdays. The Western Will County Communication Center received a 911 call at 11:39 a.m. reporting a fire at 24047 W. Lockport St., and firefighters were on the scene within four minutes.

The restaurant's "brave staff went above and beyond and tried to extinguish" the grease fire before Plainfield firefighters arrived.

"WOW! What a day! We want to thank everyone for their personal texts, emails, calls, words of encouragement and kindness online," the restaurant shared in a message on Facebook. "... The fire, police, paramedics and village staff went above and beyond to assist with what was a very scary situation."

Crews extinguished the fire before it could spread to neighboring businesses, which had taken precautions to save their merchandise and clients. The blaze ultimately caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to the restaurant.

"HopScotch has been blessed to be open just shy of 14 years," the staff wrote. "We were preparing for a new menu release and 14 year anniversary party/menu relaunch in a few weeks. That will have to wait. We will be closed as we try to clean up and get ready to invite everyone back in."
