Gas Leak Near Costco In Plainfield: Police

Costco remains open while crews work to fix the Thursday morning leak near Route 30 and Boulevard Drive.

PLAINFIELD, IL — Plainfield police are alerting residents of a gas leak near I-55 in town Tuesday morning. The leak happened on the roadway that leads to Costco, according to Fire Chief Jon Stratton.

Officers posted on Facebook around 7:25 a.m. asking residents to avoid the area near Route 30 and Boulevard Drive due to the incident. Nicor Gas has since shut off the gas and has several crews on-site working to fix the problem, Stratton said.

Before crews were able to shut off the gas, the fire chief said he was told the pipe was losing between 400 to 600 pounds of gas per minute.

Until the issue is repaired, Stratton said Costco has no gas service, which means the bakery and area where fried chicken can be found are not operating. The store remains open.
