Geography Bee

St. Mary's Students Take On the World!

Peter D., a sixth grader, won the National Geography Bee at St. Mary Immaculate Parish School in Plainfield. The competition has students answering geography questions provided by the National Geographic Society. Congratulations also go to second place finisher, Chris C., 6th grade and third place Ben D., 6th grade.

The Geography Bee, now more properly known as the National Geographic Bee, begins at the local school level. School winners then take a special written test to qualify as one of the top 100 students in Illinois to participate in the state level contest on March 27, 2020. Should he win the state competition, Peter would travel to Washington, D.C., to compete against students from across the United States in the national bee.

At St. Mary’s, it all started in fifth through eighth grade classroom bees. Our ten finalists were selected after many rounds of competition and an exciting tie-breaker. The other students competing were: Josh B., Hugh C., Veronica G., Aiden M., Padraig R., Tessa R., and Jonny V. Peter won the SMI School Championship where the ten finalists competed on December 16, 2019 at a school assembly attended by all third through eighth grade students.
