Grease Fire Closes Plainfield Wendy's Restaurant

A blaze broke out recently remodeled restaurant on Tuesday morning.

PLAINFIELD, IL — Fire officials anticipate a Plainfield Wendy's restaurant will be closed for "quite a while" after a grease fire on Tuesday morning. Plainfield Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said the fire broke out just after 8 a.m. at the Wendy's near Route 59 and 135th Street, saying heavy black smoke was showing when firefighters arrived. No customers were in the restaurant at the time of the fire, and the three employees who were in the building were able to evacuate, he said.

Stratton said blaze started as a grease fire in the fryer. In addition to fire and smoke damage, he said fire extinguishers also caused residual damage to the restaurant's kitchen.

Will County Health Department officials were en route to the restaurant, and all food products in the kitchen would have to be thrown out and replaced, Stratton said.
