Help vote for Amending the Sex Registration Act

We are trying to get all sex offenders identified properly in the system so we can help keep our communities safer.

I’ve been working with a family in Plainfield to change a law that deals with who gets put on the sex offender list. Their daughter at the time was 15 years old when she was sexually abused by a neighbor. The police eventually arrested the neighbor, but on battery charges, which is a misdemeanor offense. He was found guilty of the charges, and only did 4 months jail time. However, he was NOT put on the sex offender list b/c under IL law, Battery is not an offense that is subject to Sex Offender Registration. This abuser had 3 kids in the Plainfield school system (he just moved before the school year) which means all the safety protocols we have to identify people like him failed, all because he did not have to register. We are trying to change that. We have currently 275 superintendents in the state of IL who have written a letter of support of the law, including Dr. Abrell and Dr. Harper from District 202, and are being supported by Will, Dupage, Kendall, and Lake County State‘s Attorney offices, The Attorney General‘s office (Lisa Madigan), The Illinois Board of Education, and General Federation of Women‘s Club of Illinois. The house bill number is HB2548 (Stephanie‘s Law) being sponsored by House of Representative Mark Batinick. PLEASE READ, SIGN, AND SHARE this petition. Every vote gets sent to the IL House of Representative and is one step closer to keeping our children safe.
