Historic Plainfield Walking Tour Returning By Popular Demand

PLAINFIELD, IL — After a successful first tour of historic downtown Plainfield in May, Naperville Preservation is hosting a second event Saturday morning.

Along with being home to 23 local landmarks, Plainfield's downtown is also designated a National Historic District. During the walking tour, participants will learn about Plainfield's historic buildings whose architectural styles range from Greek Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne to Richardsonian Romanesque and International.

Vernacular homes, such as bungalows, American Foursquare and Upright-and-Wing, will also be showcased.

Similar to the previous event, Michael Bortel, chairman of the Plainfield Historic Preservation Commission and former president of the Plainfield Historical Society, will lead the group. Philip Buchanan, a Naperville resident and former commissioner of Plainfield Historic Preservation, is one of the organizers of the upcoming event.

Naperville Preservation hosts the event as a way to highlight the success Plainfield Historic Preservation Commission has had restoring and adaptively reusing old buildings, Buchanan told Patch in May.

Ahead of the tour, the group will convene at 9 a.m. in the parking lot near Station One Smokehouse, 15025 S. Des Plaines St.

Registration can be completed through an online form. The tour will be capped at 15 people, according to the Plainfield Historical Society.
