The Holiday season can be such a wonderful time of year, but unfortunately, it can also be a busy time for thieves to break into unoccupied homes while the homeowners are away. Below are some simple steps to keep your home safe and secure if you plan on traveling for the holidays.

- Don't boast about your holiday travel plans on social media. In fact, it is highly recommended by law enforcement to keep a low profile before and during any trips and vacations.

- Have a trusted family member, friend, or neighbor check on your home while you're away. Ask them to retrieve any mail, packages, or newspapers that may be piling up.

- Use lights with a timer, both indoor and outdoor. With today's technology, there are devices that can be easily installed and controlled through your smart phone devices.

- Secure ALL windows and doors, including your garage door. If your garage door opener isn't equipped with MyQ technology, or other kinds of security features, consider unplugging your garage door opener and locking the door till you return.
