Kindness Counts at Montessori of Plainfield!
Summer camp is in full swing and the students have been exploring dinosaurs, sea life, space and other typical child centered subject matter. One session the students and parents overwhelmingly voted as their favorite was “Kindness, Yoga and Bullying”. Montessori environments foster “educating the whole child”. An approach that values the human spirit and the development of physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth of children.
During the camp session on kindness, yoga and bullying, the children performed daily acts of kindness within their classroom as well as the community. They also practiced giving each other daily compliments and self -regulation techniques. In addition, the children practiced yoga and meditation. In their final week, the focus was on feelings and bullying. They also brainstormed positive ways to express anger and frustration. These strong feelings can be challenging for young children and having them come up with their own ideas empowers them to feel more in control of their emotions.
