Library Board Appoints New Trustee

Plainfield-resident Alicia Malec was sworn in last night as the newest member of the Plainfield Public Library District’s Board of Trustees.

“Alicia and her family members have been familiar faces at the Library for many years,” said Plainfield Library Director Lisa Pappas. “She knows what the average Plainfield Library patron wants to see offered because she is that patron. I believe she will represent Plainfield well in her capacity as a trustee.”

Malec brings a great deal of experience to the table. She has worked in education her entire career in both school and corporate environments. She was a kindergarten teacher at St. Mary Immaculate Parish School in Plainfield from 2008 to 2018 and is currently an Operational Excellence Trainer with Evolent Health.

“I love to read; I love to get other people to read. I read books. I read online. I read Twitter. I google just about everything in order to learn more while reading,” said Malec. “Combining this passion for reading with community service is such a great match.”
She’s also served as a library trustee in the past. She was a member of the Village of Brookfield Library Board of Trustees from 1999 until her family moved to Plainfield in 2001.
“It was exciting to learn more about the services the library offered and make decisions about strategy and finance,” said Malec. “At that time, the internet was ‘new-ish.’ It was interesting to think about the possibilities that brought to the library — mostly good, some concerning — and how those possibilities would be managed.”

The Plainfield Library Board of Trustees is a seven-member board that establishes library policy, hires the library administrator, adopts the annual library budget, authorizes library services and sets salaries.

Elected members of the board serve four-year terms, but Malec was selected by the board to fill a vacancy that occurred when trustee Ryan Gilles resigned. Malec will serve the remainder of Gilles’s term through April 2021. Malec then will have the option to seek re-election.
“I truly think I have something to offer,” said Malec. “I have reached a point where I think I could truly be a valued member of a group of people dedicated to a common goal. I am very excited about this opportunity. It would be my sincere hope to make a difference.”
