Man Rescued From DuPage River: Plainfield Fire Department

Man hanging from the branches was safely returned ashore by the water rescue team, and no injuries have been reported.

PLAINFIELD, IL — A man was rescued from the DuPage River Saturday morning after he was knocked off his canoe, the Plainfield Fire Protection District said.

At approximately 8:22 a.m. Saturday, the Plainfield Fire Protection District was alerted to an unattended canoe on the DuPage River near 135th Street. The water rescue team was immediately deployed, and from the bridge on 135th Street, they could see an adult man in the water hanging onto some branches.

Fire Chief Jon Stratton went along the bike path at Eaton Preserve and located the man who was unable to get himself ashore. Another rescue team was deployed downstream in case the man was unable to hang on and got washed downstream. The rescue team was able to reach the man by boat and pull him out of the water.

The man was wearing a life jacket and no one was injured during the rescue.

Stratton is asking residents to avoid the water right now due to the flooding and fast motion of the river.

"Please stay off the river until it gets below flood stage. The rain up north affects the river level here. Please don’t walk into the flood water or drive into flood water," he said in a release.
