Super-retailer Meijer hopes to make turkeys fly -- figuratively, not literally -- off store shelves this Thanksgiving by offering discounted turkeys starting Nov. 15.

For the second consecutive year, when Meijer customers spend $20, their purchase of any fresh or frozen turkey, regardless of brand or size, will be 50-percent off. Meijer touts that it expects to lead the Midwest in low-price Thanksgiving turkeys.

Meijer-brand frozen turkeys will be priced at 52-cents per pound if customers spend $20 or more on in-store purchases. Meijer will also carry organic turkeys in each of its 223 stores across the Midwest. The promotion lasts from November 15 through Thanksgiving Day, November 26.

“A Thanksgiving meal isn’t complete without the turkey, and with these great prices, Meijer wants to ensure that our customers can provide their families with the best holiday experience,” Jerry Suter, vice president of meat and seafood, said in a company news release. “Not only is Meijer able to deliver a delicious meal to our customers, but we’re able to do so at a tremendous value.”

In addition to turkey, Meijer is offering the makings for traditional Thanksgiving side dishes, such as stuffing, sweet potatoes, potatoes and vegetables, and pumpkin pies.

Last year, the Grand Rapids, MI-based retailer sold 900,000 turkeys. This Thanksgiving season, Meijer expects to sell 1 million turkeys. The retailer says 75 percent of Americans purchase turkeys in the five days leading up to Thanksgiving.

Meijer is also preparing for high-sales of pre-made Thanksgiving dinners for those who want the traditional holiday meal without the time spent in the kitchen. Consumer demand for pre-made meals at Thanksgiving has become a growing trend in recent years for individuals looking for convenience.

Meijer is offering a deluxe, pre-made turkey dinner for $54.99-$59.99, depending on the market, which includes a 10-12 pound prebaked turkey, home-style stuffing, roasted turkey gravy, cranberry salad, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and a dozen Kings Hawaiian dinner rolls.

A deluxe ham dinner is priced at $54.99-$59.99, depending on the market, and includes a 7-9 pound spiral ham, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, roasted turkey gravy, cranberry salad and a dozen Kings Hawaiian dinner rolls. Both deluxe dinners can feed between 8-10 people.

While Meijer will work to accommodate any customer request, deli team members encourage customers to place orders for those pre-made dinners 24 hours in advance to ensure availability.
