Teen Witness Shot, Adult Victim Battered In McDonald's Incident

PLAINFIELD, IL — A witness who followed two suspects after seeing them batter a victim in "some type of sale" turned bad at a Plainfield McDonald's was shot by the suspects after following them when they fled, Plainfield police said Monday. Police said the incident started just after 7 p.m. at the fast-food restaurant at at 135th Street and Route 30 Saturday.

Police said an 18-year-old went to the restaurant to meet up with the suspects for the transaction. Detective Sgt. Kevin McQuaid said the sale in question remains under investigation and did not say what type of deal occurred.

McQuaid said during the transaction, one of the offenders struck the victim several times in the face and head before both suspects fled the McDonald's in a vehicle described as a gray Toyota Rav4.

McQuaid said a 17-year-old who witnessed the incident but was not part of the transaction followed the Toyota, which fled to the the 15500 block of Van Dyke Road. As the Toyota pulled up to the witness' vehicle, one suspect fired a shot into the witness's vehicle, hitting the 17-year-old in the side.

The gunshot victim drove back to the McDonald's, where he called family members. Relatives drove the teen to the hospital.

The battery victim had also left the McDonald's and contacted family, who brought him to Edward Hospital's Plainfield campus for treatment of injuries to his head and face. Police said neither victim had life-threatening injuries.

According to McQuaid, a witness was able to get the Toyota's license plate. The vehicle was located about an hour after the shooting and two juveniles were brought back to the Plainfield Police Department for questioning.

Police said charges are still pending and the investigation remains active. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about it should contact Detective Chris Allen at (815) 267-7215 or McQuaid at (815) 267-7209.

On Sunday, police posted about the incident on Facebook, saying only that two people were treated for "non-life-threatening injuries" at Edward Hospital's Plainfield campus on Sunday. "It was determined the injuries were related to the same incident," police said, adding that the incident began at McDonald's and "continued to the dead-end of Van Dyke Road adjacent to the Wallin Woods subdivision."

McQuaid urged anyone who witnesses a crime not to pursue the suspects and instead to call police. "Anyone who witnesses something like this should be calling 911," he said.
