Obituary: John Joseph Gabel

A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps and recipient of a Purple Heart passes away at age 82.

Obituary was published and funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care and direction of the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home and Crematory.

John Joseph Gabel

Age 82, a lifelong Joliet resident, passed away at his home, Sunday morning, September 29, 2024.

John was born in Joliet on October 7, 1941, son of the late Rosanne (nee McInaney) and William Gabel, Jr. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa and then went on to achieve his MBA from Lewis University in Romeoville. John worked as an accountant, first for Continental Bank of Chicago for nearly 20 years, then privately, until his retirement. John was a devout Catholic and a lifelong parishioner of St. Patrick Catholic Church. He was known for having his rosary with him at all times. In his free time, he enjoyed a good round of golf.

John served his country admirably as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and was awarded a Purple Heart.

John is survived by his brothers, William (Carroll) Gabel, III of the Villages, FL., and Fr. Martin Gabel of Naperville; his nephews, William (Nicole) Gabel, IV and Christopher (Yaritza) Gabel; great-niece Sophia Rose and great-nephews Sebastian and Nicholas; special cousin, Maryellen (the late Dan) Thomas; and numerous other cousins and dear friends.

All friends and relatives are invited to celebrate John's life on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 710 W. Marion Street in Joliet, where the family will receive guests from 10:00 a.m. until the time of his Memorial mass at 10:30 a.m. Inurnment with full military honors will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in John's name to Lightways Hospice would be greatly appreciated.
