Plainfield Area Public Library Announces Renovation Project
This $10.5 million dollar project is self-funded and estimated to take one-year to complete.

Plainfield Area Public Library (PAPL) is pleased to announce a transformative $10.5 million renovation and addition project, entirely self-funded, to enhance our facilities and services for the benefit of the community. This endeavor reflects our commitment to providing an exceptional library experience while meeting the evolving needs of our patrons.
The project, which includes the sale of $7.5 million in bonds, will commence in mid-May 2024. To facilitate the renovation process, PAPL will be temporarily closed for two weeks beginning Monday, April 29. During this closure period, our dedicated team will work diligently to prepare the Library for the construction crew with limited services available. You will still be able to return items to the outside book drops and place items on hold to be picked up at either of our Grab & Go Locker locations or one of the other libraries in Pinnacle, our consortium of six area libraries.
Key highlights of the renovation include:
- Drive-through pickup window
- Study rooms
- Ground floor space
- Dedicated teen space
- Updated early literacy area
- Outdoor programming area
"We are excited to embark on this significant renovation and addition project, which will enable us to better serve our community and enhance the overall library experience," said Library Director Lisa Pappas. "While we recognize that accessing the building may be challenging during this time, we are committed to minimizing disruptions and ensuring that our patrons have access to the resources and services they need."

Cardholders can enjoy what we have to offer even if the building is closed for safety reasons, or if they just prefer to avoid the construction altogether. Curbside Pickup and our Grab & Go Lockers provide contactless pickup options. Books, audiobooks, movies, TV, magazines and more are ready to download right to a smartphone, tablet or computer, and online resources on our website are available 24/7. Programs will move to off-site locations thanks to our generous community partners: Plainfield Park District, Plainfield Township and Plainfield United Methodist Church.
We are excited to kick off this year-long project with a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, April 17 at 6:00 PM. Construction is expected to be completed in May 2025, just in time to celebrate our 100th anniversary. We will have much to celebrate in 2025 and look forward to sharing the fun with you!
As we progress with the renovation and addition project, we encourage patrons to follow us on social media for updates and announcements regarding the project timeline, temporary closure and alternative parking options. You can find us on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
