Plainfield Bakery Closing Saturday, Owner Moves On
After 14 years, Cathy, of Cathy's Sweet Creations, is stepping out of the bakery game. If her bakery doesn't sell by Saturday, it's closing.

PLAINFIELD, IL — Cathy DeAvila opened the aptly named Cathy's Sweets Creations 14 years ago and has been running the small business since. Now, with her hands cramping up a bit and a new 8-week-old grandson to help care for, DeAvila is ready to put away the oven mitts.
"I thought 'okay, it's time for a new adventure,'" she told Patch.
In 2014, when the bakery was nearly 10 years old, they moved from the 24000 block of W. Lockport Street to its current home at 15515 S. Route 59 in the Village Square Center.

However, business wasn't quite what DeAvila expected and her hands and shoulders were cramping a bit, which can be problematic for precision decoration.
DeAvila said there've been about 20 parties interested in buying the bakery, which she put up for sale about three months ago for $69,000. But, there were no serious offers. She announced on Facebook in early October that if nobody bought it by Oct. 27, the business would close.

Over the past few Saturdays since the announcement, locals have been coming in to get their fix before Cathy's closes. "We've been very nicely busy. We sold out two of the three Saturdays," she told Patch. One of the Saturdays, the sold out around 11 a.m. They open at 9 a.m.
Fans and loyal customers of Cathy's are naturally sad that she's leaven.
"No!!! I didn’t grant you permission [sad face emoji] Now where am I going to get my lemon cake with Bavarian cream filling from?" one customer commented.
"I am so sad Cathy to hear about your closing of your bakery! I loved so many things in your bakery, but will definitely miss the kolacky and the Paczki! Where am I going to get my Paczki now? I do understand though as I am sure it is very tiring on one’s body! I wish you all the best and enjoy your family now!" another said.
Arguably more sad than the customers about the business closing is Cathy herself. "I've gotten so many wonderful comments on Facebook and a thank you card from a customer for their last birthday cake. It made me cry," she told Patch.
DeAvila's not done baking, though. Cathy's is taking orders for up until they close at 3 p.m. on Saturday and is offering some deals on cookies and cupcakes.
Beyond the bakery, she'll spending time in a shared commercial kitchen in Channahon during November and December to work on hundreds of gingerbread houses and instructing classes.
Come January, she plans to take a step back and figure out the next step for her. "We'll see where life takes me."
