PHSCC senior and NHS social campaigns officer Melissa Feliciano came up with the idea for the 5k when she was looking for a new NHS project.

“I was speaking with my advisor and she told me to find something that I am passionate about to make a difference,” said Feliciano, who admits that she used to run a lot more than she does now.

“But I do have numerous friends on the school’s cross country and track team,” which also influenced her interest in staging a 5k event.

She did some research and learned that the Doctors Without Borders organization provides humanitarian aid and health care around the world to those who cannot afford proper care, Feliciano said.

“This is something I always imagined myself doing when I’m older and immediately wanted to help,” she said. “I emailed the organization and the head coordinator helped me come up with the idea for a 5k that not only involves the school but the community as well.”
