Plainfield Central Teacher Honored For Dedication To Students

PLAINFIELD, IL — Plainfield High School – Central Campus math teacher Arlene Morris has been named a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by The National Society of High School Scholars. Junior Omar Afzal nominated Morris after taking her geometry class last year.

Each year, student members of The National Society of High School Scholars can nominate an educator who has made a significant contribution to their academic career.

The honor recognizes educators whose passion and devotion inspire their students to grow and develop as scholars, leaders and citizens.

Afzal was struggling in the class and Morris would check up on him via email and talk to his parents, he said. “She wanted to make sure I did my best,” Afzal said.

He earned a B in the class and is now taking algebra II.

Getting the award is an honor, said Morris, who has been at PHS-CC since 2001.

“Every year has some challenges and last year was probably one of my most challenging years,” Morris said.

That class was tough on Afzal, Morris said. “So, to have a student appreciate all your effort in a year that is particularly trying pushes me to continue doing what I’m doing,” she said.

Morris tries to make math fun for students and make it relatable to their lives, she said.

“I’m passionate about what I teach so hopefully that comes across to the students,” Morris said.
