PLAINFIELD, IL — "I like to smile because Lions' Nuts are here," says a Plainfield Lions Club member dressed as Buddy from the classic film "Elf." The Plainfield Lions' annual nut sale has started, and to promote it, members filmed their version of a Christmas movie medley video.

"I'm running out of material, Lion Fry. We've got to come up with an idea, like a commercial or something, to sell our Lions' nuts," Tod Schnowske says while sitting in a hot tub with Steve Fry at the start of the video.

The idea: a 5-minute short film titled "We're Nuts For Charity" that shows club members reenacting classic scenes from popular movies, including "A Christmas Story," "Elf," "Die Hard," "Home Alone" and "It's A Wonderful Life" — all while peppering the scenes with nut sale references.

Proceeds from the nut sale will go to fund the holiday gift basket program, the group's largest annual community support effort that provides about 800 people in need with gift cards to buy a holiday meal.

"Please consider purchasing [our nuts] for the holidays," Plainfield Lions' President Lisa Behounek said in the video after endorsing — and jokingly apologizing for — the promotional film. "All the funds made from our nut sale go directly back to support charity in our community."

Purchases can be made by messaging Schnowske or Fry on Facebook or emailing them at sfry@sfaltd.us and tschnowske@sfaltd.us.

Donations to the Plainfield Lions Club can also be made in any amount, and funds will go to deliver holiday food baskets to families in need in the community. Checks can be mailed to:
