Plainfield Man, 34, Dies After Being Hit By Car On Route 59: Coroner
Police said the driver couldn't avoid hitting the man, who was standing in the right lane of Route 59, not in a crosswalk.
PLAINFIELD, IL — A Plainfield man was killed Nov. 23 after he was hit by a car on Route 59, according to the Will County Coroner's Office.
Gabriel Schwegler was pronounced dead at 4:22 a.m. Nov. 23 at UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Bolingbrook, officials said in a news release Monday morning. An autopsy revealed he sustained multiple injuries from being hit by a car.
Plainfield police and firefighters were dispatched to the intersection of Route 59 and Pheasant Drive after the 2021 Nissan Altima hit the pedestrian. Officials learned the car was driving south in the right lane on Route 59 when the driver saw someone standing in the lane of traffic, facing northbound.

The man, later identified as Schwegler, was wearing dark clothing and not standing within a crosswalk, Commander Anthony Novak told Patch. He said the driver told police that after seeing the pedestrian in the road, he was not able to swerve in time to avoid hitting him.
Schwegler was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Officials said his final cause and manner of death will be determined at a later date.
