PLAINFIELD, IL — A Plainfield man was convicted of multiple felonies five years after attacking his then-girlfriend in the home of the mother of his child.

Will County Judge Carmen Goodman found Darrius Brown, 42, guilty of aggravated domestic battery, aggravated unlawful restraint with a deadly weapon and unlawful restraint.

The charges stem from Brown's attack on March 17, 2018, when he, his girlfriend and her son were at the Plainfield house of the mother of Brown's child. His girlfriend told prosecutors he was acting paranoid that day and "became enraged" after a phone call, prompting him to throw his cell phone at her, splitting her skin open. He proceeded to grab her by the back of her hoodie, choking her as he pulled her down the stairs, according to Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow.

Brown began following the woman around the house, telling her she wasn't going anywhere without him. He then grabbed her with both arms, shook her and smashed her head and back into the door of a closet, leaving visible bruises on her, before putting his forearm across her neck and constraining her breathing, officials said.

The man momentarily paused his attack when his girlfriend's 5-year-old son asked what he was doing, prosecutors noted. When the boy left the room, Brown grabbed a nearby hammer and wielded it while still pressing the woman against the closet door with his full body weight.

Prosecutors said Brown then forced the woman to drive him, her son in tow, to his mother's apartment in Chicago. Once there, Brown stole his girlfriend's cell phone and ran into the house. She followed him to try to get her phone back when he punched her in the eye, kicked and hit her, and pushed her up against a wall and a table, again hitting her head on the wall.

"At one point during the attack, Brown held himself off the ground using the door frame to enable him to repeatedly stomp the victim with both feet," Assistant State’s Attorney Carole Cheney wrote in a news release, noting Brown was wearing Timberland boots.

The mother of his son was not home at the time of the attack. She was in the hospital receiving extensive car for injuries she sustained in a four-day attack by Brown from Feb. 9-13, 2018, officials said. He was found guilty on Oct. 8, 2020, of aggravated domestic battery in the attack and was sentenced to eight years in prison.

The latest charges against Brown have the following sentencing ranges, with enhancements due to his criminal history:

  • Aggravated domestic battery: six to 30 years to be served at 85 percent with 4 years of mandatory supervised release
  • Aggravated unlawful restraint: two to 10 years at 50 percent, probational
  • Unlawful restraint: one to six years, probational

Brown is due to appear in court for sentencing on Jan. 26.
