Plainfield Park District Women's History Month Spotlight

March is Women’s History Month, commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in American history. In honor of Women’s History Month and the Plainfield Park District’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Policy, we are continuing to highlight some of the amazing women that are part of the District.

The final feature is on Plainfield Park Board Commissioner Colette Safford, who was elected a commissioner in 2021. In addition to regular commissioner duties, she is also the chairperson of the Personnel & Policy Committee and the co-chair of the Recreation & Marketing Committee. She chose to run for the commissioner position to give back to the community and also increase visibility to diverse residents.

“Public service is personally rewarding as there’s no greater way to help shape your community than by getting involved,” Colette said. “Being a commissioner provides an up-close opportunity to make decisions that improve the quality of life for all residents, regardless of their socio-economic or racial background. I also like working with the Park District staff, who on a daily basis, make hard work look easy.”

Colette’s children grew up participating in various Plainfield Park District activities and events, including summer camp, organized sports and special events.

“Parks and recreation enhances the quality of life of our member communities by providing an outlet to enjoy nature, play sports, and connect with friends and neighbors,” Colette said. “Residents have access to a vast selection of playgrounds, sports facilities, running and biking trails, and not to mention, the state-of-the-art Prairie Activity & Recreation Center.”

Colette is an accomplished legal professional who currently practices at Safford Law, LLC in Joliet. She previously worked at O’Dekirk, Allred and Associates, LLC in Joliet, Office of the Will County Public Defender, and Noonan and Lieberman, LTD in Chicago. She is a graduate of The John Marshall Law School in Chicago.
