Plainfield Police To Increase Enforcement Around Thanksgiving

Drivers should expect to see more police out starting Friday in the department's effort to keep impaired drivers off the road.

PLAINFIELD, IL — If you're planning on traveling around Thanksgiving or just spending time throughout Plainfield, it may be good to note there will be more cops out on the streets. The Plainfield Police Department's Thanksgiving campaign for safe and sober driving starts Friday, officials announced Thursday.

Ahead of Thanksgiving on Nov. 25, Plainfield police are joining almost 200 local police and sheriff's departments throughout Illinois to reinforce "click it or ticket" and "drive sober or get pulled over" reminders.

"We will be stepping up patrols to keep impaired drivers off the roads and ensure everyone makes it home from their celebrations, and all occupants in vehicles are properly restrained," officials said in a news release.

Running through Nov. 29, the campaign covers one of the busiest times on Illinois roads, so police are stepping up patrols to keep impaired drivers off the road. The enforcement period is paid for by federal safety funds from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Police also shared a few reminders in a news release for people celebrating the holidays.

  • Make a plan for a sober ride home before you go out.
  • If you've been drinking or using marijuana or other drugs, call a taxi, take mass transit, or call a family member to get you home safely.
  • Use your favorite ride-share service, such as Uber or Lyft.
  • If you see a drunk driver, pull over safely and call 911.
  • Make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt. It is the best defense against an impaired driver.
